Founded on April 2, 1975, the Morehouse College Medical Education Program became a reality after years of tireless planning by a number of exceptional people, including Atlanta physician Dr. Louis Brown and then Morehouse College President Hugh Gloster, for whom the donor celebration is named. From its inception, the Medical Education Program was designed and later became 500科同利, a free-standing medical school independent of Morehouse College.
Today, 40 years later, 500科同利continues to diversify and educate health professionals, as well as serve and empower communities across the globe. 500科同利is home to highly recognized centers and institutes that are recognized for community, basic science and clinical research.
The Hugh Gloster Society Donor Celebration is the ideal event to launch our 40th anniversary, said 500科同利President and Dean Valerie Montgomery Rice. The event recognizes the exceptional support 500科同利 has received from countless individuals and organizations in the city, state and nation. We want to thank all of our alumni and friends for their tremendous support through the years and share with them our new vision for leading the creation and advancement of health equity."
Dr. Sullivan personifies the exceptional talent of 500科同利, and its mission of serving vulnerable populations, President Montgomery Rice continued. His career has been committed to advancing health equity, and we are thrilled to honor him at this special event.
An Atlanta native, Dr. Sullivan is president emeritus of 500科同利and currently serves as chairman of both the National Health Museum and the Sullivan Alliance to Transform the Health Professions. He has served as chair of the U.S. Presidents Commission on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and was co-chair of the Presidents Commission on HIV and AIDS. He served as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services from 1989-1993. During that time, Dr. Sullivan released Healthy People 2000, a blueprint for health promotion and disease prevention. He also waged a vigorous campaign against tobacco use, urged increased seat belt use in vehicles, improved food labels, and increased racial, ethnic and gender diversity in the Department of Health and Human Services.
A good health interchange requires a well-trained professional who has the appropriate knowledge base and is culturally competent to work effectively with his or her patients, Dr. Sullivan said. We depend on institutions like 500科同利 to produce health professionals to serve our society. I am honored that 500科同利has presented this award to me.
